When Work Started

Construction of the bypass commenced on Wednesday 26th July 2006 at 11.30am when Mary Long (88) and Claire Fletcher (11) accompanied by Guy Richardson, Chairman of the villages residents committee and Harry Knowles, Chief Executive of Furness Enterprise performed the Start of Works ceremony in front of an invited audience of 80 people,see Gallary part of the website.

April 2008

At the start of April 2008 Laing O'Rourke has made excellent progress on the  build of the £35.3m bypass  with final tie ins to the existing road being made and tarmac surfacing being all but completed.The contractor has so far:-

  • employed 130 people on the scheme
  • laid many km of drains
  • excavated 150,000 cubic metres of material
  • helped Burlington Slate Ltd become one of the main local firms beneffiting from the project as a subcontractor.

 

Contract History

The contract award follows the 1st December 2004 Government go-ahead to the 3.8km long, dual two-lane High and Low Newton A590 bypass in South Cumbria which links the Lindale bypass and Barrowbanks and the Early Contractor Involvement initial contract award to Laing O'Rourke on 28th July 2005.  The anticipated duration of the build contract is 24 months. Timeline to Build

17th December 2004 - Line Orders for the route were published.

15th March 2005 - Tenders for an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract were invited.

24th May 2005

Construction tenders closed

May/June 2005

Ecological/archeological surveys completed

28th July 2005

Contract award to Laing O'Rourke

August-December 2005

Detailed design by Laing O'Rourke and liaison with English Nature/land owners and sub-regional interests including businesses.

January 2006

Highways Agency indicate cost rises mean scheme to be referred to Department of Transport Ministers for consideration.  Pre-construction exhibition, construction start on site.

12th April 2006

Ministers approve additional funding

April-June 2006

Ground investigations

26th July 2006

Construction works began at 11.30am.

August 2006

Main Site earthworks start

Winter 2007

Structural Works and surfacing underway
