The A590 Now campaign action plan involves:

  • Working with the Highways Agency and contractor Laing O'Rourke

  • A PR campaign, to celebrate start of construction, construction progress, promotion of the benefits it will bring, and to publicise key stages of construction and celebrate its completion on 8th and 12th April 2008.
  • Supporting plans programmes  and local initiatives for re-creating a traditional Lakeland village at High Newton on completion of the bypass.

  • Liaison with the Highways Agency to ensure the scheme for the bypass has a top quality design which integrates it into the landscape.
  • We will help the Agency implement a suitable Route Managment Strategy for the whole of the A590.  A590 Now campaigners would like to see more A590 proposals implemented. Asurvey is underway to assess what industry regards as the priorities. Initial ideas may include :

- A climbing lane at Barrow Banks

 - Greenodd - a roundabout and widening/straightening of the Greenodd/Bouth road end stretch of the A590.

- Widening between Meathop & Sampool and west of Haverthwaite.

-Development of measures to facilitate good access to industrial sites such as a gyratory system in Barrow and to sites in East Ulverston.

- Promoting the need for better road user information / links between Furness and the M6 to improve journey time reliability for businesses.

  • Lobbying for an adequately funded Route Management Strategy to help facilitate a real difference in journey times, safety and road standards instead of just introducing "cosmetic signs & lines" measures.
  • Co-ordinating all lobbying for improvement of the A590.
